Roughly hundred Spanish graduates with disabilities participated in Erasmus+ Program in 2017

This low number of participants will be one of discussion highlights at the 4th International Congress “University and Disability” organized by the ONCE Foundation, that will take place in Madrid, on November 15 and 16.

(Madrid, October 2nd, 2018).- A total of 102 Spanish University graduates with disabilities completed their studies abroad thanks to Erasmus+ Program in 2017; very small number of participants if we compare it with a total of 40 thousand Spanish Erasmus students registered on the same date.

Worried, the ONCE Foundation decided to tackle this issue at the 4th International Congress of University and Disability that will take place in Madrid, on November 15 and 16, especially at the roundtable called “International networks for inclusive education”.

Nevertheless, the Organization has been managing various programs during past years until present, as indicates the Commissioner for Universities, Youth and Special Plans, Isabel M. Martínez Lozano, who highlights the one called Becas ‘Oportunidad al Talento’ (Scholarships “Opportunity for the talent”). In this program, she points out that during the past 5 years until today they have maintained the category of support for the mobility through which they aim to enforce the finance support that receive students with disabilities.

According to the data from the Spanish Service for the Internationalization of Education (SEPIE), last year there were 102 Spanish Erasmus+ students with disabilities that received some kind of support towards their special needs within the field of higher education; 74 of them within Erasmus study program and 28 of them on Erasmus Internship.

In this sense, Martínez Lozano highlights that the ONCE Foundation is collaborating with Universities in order to promote the access, both to the knowledge and physical environment, with the purpose to avoid exclusion. Moreover, they are developing numerous lines of action through strengthening the awareness of students with disabilities in order to encourage them to participate in mobility programs such as Erasmus+. For that reason, she points out, it is essential to have allies as it is the Erasmus Student Network Spain.

The current edition of the Congress, which coincides with the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, sets its main focus on establishing that the higher education and the University studies are drivers of change for inclusion, the statement that complies with Article 26 of the aforementioned Declaration, as well as Article 24 of the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

This way, a gathering point is created for sharing experiences, best practices and the most relevant research on inclusive education, disability support services, managing inclusion, improvement of possibilities for employment, universal accessibility and all initiatives and projects related to University and Disability.

With the aim to increase the number of students with disabilities, the ONCE Foundation develops various lines of action, from strengthening young adolescents with disabilities awareness regarding the transition to higher education, to offering scholarships, as well as the possibility for the University students with disabilities to participate in its internship and traineeship program.
